3 Ways to Beat the Blues This Season for Winter Health

By                     Expert Author Debbie A. Johnson

Do you feel depressed and low-energy during winter's dark days? What you have is most likely not S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder), which is literally a medical condition similar to clinical depression. You likely just have a milder condition: seasonal depression. And that's good news because? Because it's easy to beat with three simple steps:
1. Light, light, light! Use full-spectrum light-bulbs in your home and at work, wherever possible, then add a "happy light' - You can't afford not to. What is your good mood worth to you? You can read or make phone calls or do whatever you wish near the light box or put it at your work desk. Also, once a month, try the new UV safe tanning beds. Not to tan, just to get the light your body needs.
Take a mini-vacation and close your eyes each day for a minute by your light box and imagine you are in Hawaii or another sunny destination... you may just find yourself there on a quick vacation! But in the meantime, you'll feel better. Imagine yourself immersed in joy... that will help, too!
2. Stay active. You may think winter is for hibernating, but if you do, hibernate actively! I do Zumba at home by my sunny window and alternates with swimming at an indoor pool that has lots of light coming in during the morning hours. Exercise is a magic-pill you have to earn by sweat! Also, be sure to get enough good sleep in order to have the energy you need to work out.
Are you doing the kind of exercise you love? If you are, then you're motivated to exercise more. Do you love to exercise alone or in a group? Do you need others to push you along or sweat with you? Do you need a firmly scheduled class? If so, you know what to do... join one!
Don't have time? Just imagine exercising and you'll find yourself having time! Do this visualization as you wake up in the morning or just as you are falling asleep at night, and whenever you feel guilty about not exercising! People have actually toned up just by imagining it, but you will likely find yourself at the gym, walking at lunchtime, or wherever/whenever you can best get your workout. The subconscious is a powerful tool to help you in your daily life. Just keep speaking its language-images!
3. Vitamin D-3 helps a lot - If you can't get enough real sunlight, and even if you can, take D-3 in a form that is easy to absorb and utilize by your body. If you could only take one supplement with you on a long journey, I've heard that vitamin D-3 is the one to take with you. Yes, even over vitamin C.

Panic Attack: Things to Know

By

Some of the most common triggers of a panic attack involve everyday situations such as the fear of boarding a flight, getting into a lift or traveling in public transport. Being in a crowded room could also trigger a panic attack. While most people in such a situation and with a panic disorder may feel a sense of discomfort and nausea, some may experience a heightened sense of fear. Apart from the physical symptoms such as palpitations, tense muscles and profuse sweating, an individual may also start feeling unsafe though there may be no real reason to do so.
As a result, such people often try to avoid facing situations that could act as triggers. This could result in them indulging in avoidance tactics and so miss being part of important social functions such as the graduation ceremony of a child or a wedding. Their excessive worry or fear can also isolate them from others who are unable to understand their condition.
The American Psychological Association estimates that one in every 75 people may experience a panic disorder, a serious and extremely debilitating condition that could severely impact the personal and professional life of a person. While the exact causes of a panic attack are unknown, it is believed that certain major life changes, such as those from school to college, marriage and the birth of a new born could cause a panic attack. These transitions may result in a sudden hormonal upsurge. In certain people, the risks are exacerbated because of a genetic predisposition to panic disorder. During some panic attacks, a person could re-visit a past trauma. Survivors of bombings or public shootings are more likely to experience a flight-or-fight response.
Feeling trapped and how that triggers a panic attack
Some panic attacks can make an individual feel trapped or can be the result of someone feeling that they are trapped. Some of the most common triggers are:
  • Irrational fear of planes: In today's world, when people are increasingly relying on interconnectivity, the fear of planes can be disadvantageous. A person may refuse to take food or use the toilet in a flight, and sometimes get aggressive and scream.
  • Afraid of a fall: The fear of heights can deter people from climbing escalators or taking an apartment in a tall building. They may avoid adventure activities fearing they may fall to death. Even driving over a water body could trigger a deep sense of fear.
  • Fear of insects: Most insects are harmless and do not attack unless they are harmed first. But that does not prevent people from feeling afraid of them. The unexplained fear of spiders is one such instance and is fairly common. Some may also believe that a bug bite will inevitably lead to an infection or a fatal disease, which can intensify their anxiety.
Road to recovery
Anxiety disorders such as frequent panic attacks are treatable if an expert's advice is sought in time. Delaying the problem doesn't always mean that it will subside on its own. If you realize that you tend to get unreasonably worried or scared of situations and people, you should consult a mental health expert at the earliest. The most common treatment modalities are aimed at trigger prevention and trigger acceptance. Regular physical exercise, mind-calming activities and a healthy lifestyle can help to a great extent in controlling panic attacks.

Pranic Psychotherapy Release From Addictions or Compulsive Behaviour

By                     Expert Author Roger Fontaine

I start by defining ' MCKS pranic psychotherapy'. It is a method which is based on pranic healing techniques of scanning, cleansing, energizing, shielding, and releasing. These techniques are based on the principles of transmissibility of energy from practitioner to client, on receptivity of client to receiving the healing prana, and on the shielding of the chakras and aura from penetration by negative thought entities and elementals.
Elementals are energy beings which are composed of thought entities that feed on intense emotions of anger, fear, grief, or hatred. A thought entity is an idea which has attached to it a strong emotion which gives it substance in the energy field. This entity resides in the aura, in the mental field, and can penetrate through chakras when the webs are cracked, torn, or damaged. These webs can be repaired and sealed with gold pranic light energy which the practitioner intends and transmits through their hand chakra or crystal wand.
The power of intention moving energy is at the core of the basis for pranic healing being effective.
Crystal wands are used by the practitioner of pranic psychotherapy to accelerate the intensity of energy which can be transmitted to the client and reduces considerably the absorption of negative energies involved in the healing process which may be attracted to stick to the hands and arms of the practitioner which is manipulating the energy during the healing process. This absorption of negative energy on the arms and hands of the pranic practitioner is greater when a crystal is not used. This requires the practitioner's use of an alcohol spray with certain essential oils to dissipate any negative energies which may be adhered to the hands and arms while cleansing.
Depression, anxiety, and addictions can be consequences of suffering trauma or injury whether physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually. These injuring consequences leave wounds upon the recipient and are often accompanied by recurring thoughts, emotions, and when severe, hallucinations, which inflict suffering and despair. These consequences can also be paralyzing and prevent the client from taking action to be gainfully employed, to maximize one's life potential, and to be socially active and productive financially, and to be successfully engaged in relationships at all levels.
The grace of pranic psychotherapy is in its ability to remove these negative energies which accompany trauma, injury, or accidents. The psychic shielding is also a necessary feature of this treatment to ensure that these negative energies don't return to inflict emotional and mental pain. There is often the need for subsequent repeat treatments to fully and completely remove all negative energies and elementals which are causing the recurring thoughts, emotions, and patterns.
The sealing, repairing, and strengthening of the chakral webs further ensures the healing of the etheric body and preventing elementals and negative thought entities penetrating the chakras and affecting the emotional and mental body of the client.
Master Choa Kok Sui has created this protocol which is administered through certified associate pranic healers, like myself, who have been trained in pranic psythotherapy and have documented successes with treating clients with the above mentioned wounds.
So far I've only mentioned how pranic psychotherapy can be useful to treat injuries from trauma resulting in anxiety, depression, and/or motivational paralysis.
Another important treatment feature of this pranic psychotherapy technique is to treat individuals suffering from addictive tendencies and obsessive compulsive tendencies.
The same principles apply wherein the negative thought and emotional entities are creating audio and/or video tapes of incidents of trauma or woundedness which are repeated and which induce a continuous pattern of destructive repeated behaviours which become addictions or obsessive compulsive patterns of behaviour.
Pranic Psychotherapy can be useful treatment technique for addiction to smoking, alcohol or drugs, and other repetitive negative behaviours which are destructive, self-harming, or self-limiting.
These treatments have been successful in reducing and eliminating panic attacks which clients have experienced in social contexts. The triggers which bring on these panic attacks have been identified and the removal of the anxiety energies around the aura and chakras has prevented triggering of panic attacks in future situations.
The shielding of the chakras and aura are also a necessary ingredient of this healing technique to protect the client from persistent and recurring thoughts and emotions which are symptomatic.
The element of openness and receptivity must be mentioned as being an essential aspect of the healing process. The presence of these elements is necessary to obtain a successful outcome.
There are also other reasons why people don't heal. Carolyn Myss makes mention in her book: "Why People Don't Heal". In her book she makes mention of the karmic reason for people not healing from a particular wound. In summary the reasons may be that this person has lessons to learn in this incarnation and that this soul needs to go through this trial or tribulation to learn a particular lesson. Past life negative karma catches up with us, if not resolved, and requires it being worked out, perhaps in this incarnation. That's why inner reflection and firm resolutions are necessary to heal whatever remains of past life karmas which have been destructive to self or others.

Avoid Opioid Problems

By                    Expert Author Desiree Lotz

With the recent over 9% increase in drug-related deaths, the opioid crisis has the attention of the masses. Itself killing nearly 50,000 Americans it is growing more difficult to ignore.
One element, however, remains little-known, and that there is a painkiller more powerful than any opioid: calcium GLUCONATE.
Calcium gluconate turns out to be one of the more powerful painkillers, and it's deficiency can be causing or exacerbating pain. Therefore, treating deficiency becomes key, and can be an answer to an otherwise dependent reliance upon potent, dangerous drugs.
Abnormal muscle function and deficiency...
Muscle function physically, is totally dependent upon nutrient levels chemically. Though nerves and bones depend upon certain minerals, the very function and action of muscles rely on it.
Contraction and relaxation are the main functions of muscle activity and allow a variety of movements. Calcium and its partner mineral, magnesium, are the key to these vital actions.
In deficiency, muscles are already at a disadvantage and can malfunction. This can be a predisposition to feeling pain. Tension, spasm, cramp or any other muscle disorder can result from lack of these life-giving minerals.
More potent than Opioids?
Injectable calcium has already proven to be a powerful painkiller in medicine. But its use isn't difficult to understand once you understand the body's need nutritionally.
Calcium and magnesium are partners. They work in tandem. The body requires both of them to be able to utilize either one.
But it doesn't end that simply. There must be a certain "acidic climate" for them to react and only one of the many forms of each is acceptable.
These crucial conditions already make getting sufficient supply a challenge. And in this day an age, the margin for error is enormous.
How taking extra calcium can make you DEFICIENT!
Considering the precision of the body's utilization of these minerals, it becomes easy to see that mistakenly taking an unusable form of calcium can cause other issues.
Painful conditions, such as arthritis, are caused by deposits of such minerals accumulating in surplus in the joints. These deposits tend to occur when absorption isn't possible.
Logically, getting a proper balance of calcium in its correct form is not only important, it is vital. Without it, pain and related conditions result.
What crisis beats out painkiller addiction any day of the week?
If you want to label a crisis, it is perhaps better to get down to basics.
With nutritional deficiency statistics at "out-of-control" levels and nearly a third of the planet suffering some sort of lack of nutrition, the opioid crisis seems rather minuscule. Further, painkiller addiction may be more reliant upon deficiencies than previously suspected.
With the slim tolerance of the correct forms and balance of calcium along with the conditions in which it is absorbed, it is easy to see how, even with a prudent nutritional plan, one can become deficient.
Can Getting Minerals In Sufficient Supply Offer Resolution to the Opioid Crisis?
While its debatable whether or not direct inroads can be made to an overall solution, it is easy to see that solving deficiencies can create a marked change in the existence of painful conditions. Pain, in many cases, is not necessary and can be the result of some predisposition brought on by deficiency.
Having the proper ratio, form and combination of calcium and magnesium is not just some recipe for pain relief, it is not a mere preventive measure, it is essential for proper function itself, both minerals being responsible for hundreds of body processes.
Instant CalMag-C is a supplement designed in the laboratory, reverse engineered from how the body utilizes essential calcium and magnesium. The result is a fast-absorbing, useable and effective combination that supports body functions too numerous to list.
A body which has its essential minerals and other nutrition tends to function at optimum and tends to be pain-free. Try Instant CalMag-C and find out what supplementing the two most vital minerals can do for you, and perhaps for a worldwide crisis too!

Study Links Drug Use to High Rates of Syphilis

By

A connection between drug use and high syphilis rates in the United States was established by a recent report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Sarah Kidd, lead author of the report, pointed out that two major health issues, namely addiction and syphilis, seemed to be colliding with each other.
The report displayed a connection between drug use and instances of syphilis in heterosexual men and women. As per the report, the usage of heroin, methamphetamine, and other injection drugs by the aforementioned group almost doubled from 2013 to 2017.
The report however, did not display a similar increase in drug abuse in gay men suffering from syphilis. According to the researchers, the results of the study indicated that risky sexual behaviors associated with drug abuse may be one of the key driving factors for this increase in syphilis among the heterosexual population.
People using drugs more likely to engage in unsafe sexual activities
According to experts, people abusing drugs are more likely to engage in unsafe sexual activities, thereby making them more susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Syphilis significantly increased among heterosexuals especially during the 'crack cocaine epidemic' prevalent during the 1980s and 1990s. It was observed that during this particular time period, the usage of drugs was connected with the higher transmission rates of syphilis.
According to Patricia Kissinger, professor epidemiology at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, it is common tendency among people abusing drugs to indulge in unprotected sex, exchange sex in lieu of money or drugs, and have multiple sex partners. All these are considered as significant risk factors contributing to the spread of the disease.
Syphilis rates are setting new records
At the national level, the occurrences of syphilis jumped by around 73 percent at an overall level and 156 percent in case of women patients between 2013 and 2017. While syphilis had been almost eradicated, of late, the highest resurgence of the disease was reported in California, Louisiana, and Nevada. Syphilis can be treated with antibiotics, but if left untreated, it can cause organ damage and even death in some cases. In women, congenital syphilis typically occurs when a mother transmits the disease to her unborn baby, leading to cases of premature birth and newborn fatalities.
Analyzing the syphilis cases that occurred between 2013 and 2017, the researchers discovered that methamphetamine abuse was the biggest contributor. The report revealed that more than one-third of women and a quarter of heterosexual men suffering from syphilis were reported to be abusing methamphetamine within the last year. The California Department of Public Health reported that methamphetamine use by people suffering from syphilis, doubled in case of heterosexual men and women between 2013 and 2017.
Why is it difficult to treat sexually transmitted infections?
Owing to the overlapping instances of substance abuse and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), it becomes challenging to identify and treat people suffering from syphilis. That is because, typically, people using drugs are less likely to visit a doctor or report their sexual activities or partners.
Likewise, pregnant women may refrain from seeking prenatal care and get themselves tested for syphilis owing to concerns such as their gynecologists reporting their drug abuse. To combat this issue, the CDC urges to bring about more collaboration between programs treating substance abuse and programs addressing STIs.
Fresno County reported highest rate of congenital syphilis
According to the report, the highest rate of congenital syphilis was reported in Fresno County in California. The county's community health division manager, Joe Prado, said that the California Health Department analyzed around 25 congenital syphilis cases in 2017 and more than two-thirds of these women were abusing drugs.
To address this issue, the country took proactive measures such as offering STD testing for patients getting admitted into inpatient drug treatment centers. Patients coming back for reports were provided incentives including gift cards. Apart from this, for patients undergoing drug treatment, the county offered a care package comprising of contraceptives and education materials about STIs.
Challenges faced
While it is significant to have an increased collaboration between STD clinics and drug treatment providers, it is not always that simple, since these two entities have not worked together previously. Usually both these units tend to focus only on their relevant specialties and often fail to screen people for associated ailments like syphilis or other forms of STIs or for drug abuse.
According to Jeffrey Kalusner, professor of medicine and public health at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in order to fight the rising rates of syphilis more resources are needed. He added that though policies can be implemented towards syphilis testing, these policies need to be accompanied with appropriate resources.
Seeking treatment for drug abuse
Drug abuse is often associated with the development of physical ailments like hepatitis C, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), syphilis and other STDs. These infections can be severe and result in rapid deterioration of overall health. The best way to avoid the contraction of these diseases is to avoid taking drugs or if addicted, to seek addiction treatment help at the earliest.

How To Disconnect, Release, & Let Go

By

One of the most important thing I make sure I'd do every week is to disconnect completely from all my devices when I plan a day out for myself that's dedicated not to work, to other people, just me alone. Even if it's just for half a day, or even 2 hours.
You know what I love most? Watching an "overdue movie" early in the morning picking the first slot at the theater on a Friday. I'd usually have the whole theatre to myself because nobody likes paying weekend prices for morning shows. But I think it's worth every extra dollar just to have that space for myself in the massive "dark room". It's a little different compared to being in nature. I love that too, but sometimes, just sometimes, I'd like to even shut out the sounds of the birds and crickets. To immerse in complete and total silence. Especially when you go in 10 minutes early.
You can literally have a quick power meditation or even sneak in a cat nap before the movie starts because it's solidly sound-proof and nothing from the outside can enter the room. I'd always have this extremely deep sense of serenity because it's so dark and peaceful inside. Away from all the noise outside of that room. Outside of social media, outside of the World Wide Web. Just for a little while.
You don't need to go into the mountains, you just need to get creative and strategic about the place and time. It's so vital to our self-care and awareness to take yourself out every once in a while to reconnect. Really get in touch with all your fears you've shut out, your tears you've held inside, and everything you've swept under that rug for a while now.
This weekend, find some time for yourself and find a safe space, or create an outlet for a release. Find a way to let it all go. Let go of tension, let go of stress, let go of all your limitations and beliefs that are not serving you or helping you grow anymore. It's time to let go. The past, the memories, the circumstances, the excuses, the people, especially the people, who're keeping you small. You have to let them... all go.

5 Diet Myths Exposed: Start Losing Weight the Healthy Way!

By                  Expert Author Bruce Brightman

This can be the year you finally drop those excess pounds, achieve a strong, streamlined body, and give your health a huge boost with a commitment to sensible eating.
But in order to reach your healthy weight and keep it there, you'll have to sidestep a lot of diet minefields. So many nutritional myths and faddish ideas are out there, you could easily wind up sabotaging your weight loss efforts and compromising your health, without even knowing it.
NEWSFLASH:
58% of consumers are actively trying to lose weight to improve either their appearance, health or both, according to the Natural Marketing Institute's Health & Wellness Trends Database.
MYTH #1: YOU HAVE TO GO ON A DIET TO LOSE WEIGHT.
REALITY: Most diets don't work. Instead of following the latest fashionable weight loss program, you should develop healthy, fat-burning habits and make them part of your daily life.
INSTANT ANALYSIS:
Atkins, Zone, Ornish... How do they stack up? A recent study tracked the weight loss results of obese people who followed popular diet plans for one year. In order to achieve a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI), most subjects needed to lose 41.8 lbs. At the end of 12 months, those on the Atkins low-carb plan lost 10.4 lbs; Zone moderate-carb dieters lost 3.5 lbs; and Ornish low-fat dieters lost 4.9 lbs. With all three diets, most of the participants started out as clinically obese... and ended up as clinically obese, with only a very modest weight loss to show for their year-long dieting efforts. On all three diets, the subjects experienced most of their weight loss in the first two to six months, and then began regaining most of their lost pounds.
GOOD HEALTH TIP:
It's easy to get discouraged about dieting when you keep trying the latest trends... and failing. The best way to achieve permanent weight loss is to incorporate reasonable, nutritious, and enjoyable changes into your life that you can stick with over time.
NEWSFLASH:
Consumers employed several lifestyle changes to help manage their weight in the past year.
• Smaller portions at mealtime
• Making slight lifestyle changes
• Regular and consistent exercise
• Eating smaller more frequent meals
• Making drastic lifestyle changes
• Working with dietitian/nutritionist
MYTH #2: DIET FOODS ARE A GREAT HELP FOR LOSING WEIGHT
REALITY: Many "low-fat" foods are surprisingly high in sugar content - and calories. That's because manufacturers often add sugar to compensate for the diminished flavor and texture that results from removing fat.
GOOD HEALTH TIP:
Secrets of Sneaky Sugar: A sugar by any other name is still sugar. Your "diet" food can contain added sugars in different guises you may not recognize. Here are some names to look for on the ingredient list: brown sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, fruit juice concentrates, glucose, high-fructose corn syrup, lactose, maltose, malt syrup, molasses, sucrose, syrup.
So what's a conscientious dieter to do? As always, the battle of the bulge is ultimately won in the arena of calories. Carefully check food labels for total calorie content... even when they're branded "diet" or "low-fat."
INSTANT ANALYSIS:
The Great Cookie Caper: Let's compare calories of a regular chocolate chip cookie and a reduced-fat chocolate chip cookie. The regular cookie has 3 fat grams and 49 calories; the reduced-fat cookie has 2 fat grams and 45 calories. A 4-calorie difference is not going to get you into that bikini by summer!
On the other hand, some low-fat choices can significantly slash your calorie intake. Don't want to give up cheddar cheese? One ounce of regular cheddar cheese has 6 fat grams and 114 calories; the same-sized low-fat portion has 1.2 grams of fat and an impressively reduced 49 calories!
NEWSFLASH:
When the weight loss aim is to improve their health, consumers seem to eat a more balanced diet (e.g., less sugar, fewer carbs, etc.). In the past year, consumers limited their sugar, carbohydrate, and fat intake more often than they used diet food/products to help manage their weight.
MYTH #3: YOU HAVE TO STARVE YOURSELF TO LOSE WEIGHT.
REALITY: Yes, you do have to limit your calories to shed pounds, but there's no need to starve. You can cleverly choose foods that fill you up, not out - and keep you satisfied and stoked with energy all day long. What's your best bet for filling foods? Fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. Most Americans get only half of the recommended daily intake of 25 to 30 grams of dietary fiber, putting them at risk for obesity and a host of serious health problems.
NEWSFLASH:
• 46% of consumers are choosing to eat fiber-rich foods as part of their weight management plan.10
• Consumers who eat fewer carbohydrates to lose weight also eat fiber-rich foods (66%) and participate in regular and consistent exercise (61%) to achieve their optimum weight.
Fiber comes in two types, each with its own starring role to play in protecting our health and promoting weight management. Soluble fibers dissolve in water, and are associated with regulating blood sugar levels and lowering cholesterol. Insoluble fibers or roughage can't dissolve in water, but can absorb water. This causes them to swell, making them good bulking agents that improve gastrointestinal functions and speed up elimination. By eating sufficient amounts from both fiber types, you'll enjoy their full range of health benefits. Soluble fibers: apples, citrus fruits, pears, carrots, onions, sweet potatoes, squash, legumes, lentils, barley, oats, oat bran, oatmeal. Insoluble fibers: Cabbage, beets, Brussels sprouts, turnips, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes, whole wheat bread, wheat cereal, wheat bran, rye.
GOOD HEALTH TIP:
Here are a few ideas to help you incorporate more whole grains into your daily diet:
• Create a whole grain pilaf with a mixture of barley, wild rice, brown rice, broth, and spices. For a special touch, stir in toasted nuts or chopped dried fruit.
• Try rolled oats or a crushed, unsweetened whole grain cereal as breading for baked chicken, fish, veal cutlets or eggplant parmesan.
• Freeze leftover cooked brown rice, bulgur, or barley. Heat and serve it later as a quick side dish.
INSTANT ANALYSIS:
Decode the Food Label to Find Whole Grains
• Choose foods that name one of the following whole-grain ingredients first on the label's ingredient list: brown rice, bulgur, graham flour, oatmeal, whole-grain corn, whole oats, whole rye, whole wheat, wild rice.
• Food labeled with the words "multi-grain," "stone-ground," "100% wheat," "cracked wheat," "seven-grain," or "bran" are usually not whole-grain products.
• Color is not an indication of whole grain. Bread can be brown because of molasses or other added ingredients. Read the ingredient list to see if it is a whole grain.
MYTH #4: FAT MAKES YOU FAT
REALITY: Your body needs fat to function. Fat provides you with energy, allows you to absorb key vitamins, and helps build cell walls and membranes throughout the body. Don't deprive yourself of health-giving, energy-producing fat.
NEWSFLASH:
41% of consumers employed a low-fat diet in the past year to manage their weight. And consumers were heavily invested in the use of reduced fat food/beverages.
The trick is to consume the right kind of fat - and in the right amounts. If you're like most Americans, you may be getting far too much of omega-6 fatty acids... and not nearly enough of omega-3 fatty acids.
It's easy to take in excess quantities of omega-6 fatty acids because the common vegetable oils in the American diet - such as corn, safflower and sunflowers oils - are packed with omega-6. So are meat, milk and eggs. Unfortunately, when you consume large quantities of omega-6, you not only gain weight, thanks to its high caloric content, you may also grow more susceptible to inflammation and thickening of the blood.
Omega-3 fatty acids, on the other hand, are hard to come by. The reason you're probably not getting enough of these health-giving powerhouses is that many manufacturers remove them to keep products fresh. You can ramp up your consumption of omega-3 fatty acids by nibbling on soybeans, walnuts, flaxseed, and alfalfa, and by adding cold water fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines to your menu.
INSTANT ANALYSIS:
Here's a handy guide for getting a healthy balance of fat in your daily diet: Keep total fat intake between 20 to 35 percent of calories, with most fats coming from sources of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, such as fish, nuts and vegetable oils.
GOOD HEALTH TIP:
Sip green tea, lose weight? The Chinese have long appreciated green tea for its remarkable ability to promote digestion, improve mental faculties, and regulate body temperature. Now an intriguing new study in Japan suggests that green tea may also have a helpful role to play in losing weight. Over a 12-week period, one group of men drank a bottle of tea containing 690 mg of catechins (from green tea) every day, while the other group consumed tea containing only 22 mg of catechins. The results showed that the men drinking the tea with higher catechins had lower Body Mass Index (BMI), body weight and waist circumference compared to the other group. So the next time you pour a soothing cup of green tea, consider that each sip may be helping your body break down fat, along with all its other benefits.
MYTH #5: SKIP BREAKFAST TO SLASH YOUR DAILY CALORIE INTAKE.
REALITY: While you may be tempted to miss your morning meal to save on calories, studies show that skipping breakfast can sabotage your diet efforts. A recent study examined the role that breakfast intake plays on body mass index and studied the effect of different types of breakfasts. After adjustments for sex, age and race, the results showed that people who ate different types of cereal had a lower body mass index than those who ate meat and eggs or those who skipped breakfast.
And, for girls, here's a fascinating look at the strong link between a healthy weight and breakfast: a recent analysis of government data on breakfast eating in teenagers (ages 12 to 16) showed that the thinnest girls are the most likely to eat breakfast. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the most overweight girls are the most likely to skip breakfast.
Of course, not all cereals are created equal. You won't lose weight by heaping your bowl with sugary cereal, then drowning it in whole milk. Choose a low-calorie, high fiber cereal and limit your portion size to about 150 calories. Oatmeal is an excellent option for a satisfying, high-fiber jumpstart to your day. And try skipping the fruit juice, and eating the fruit instead.
By eating a healthy, filling breakfast, you'll stay more in control of your appetite and be less prone to overeating later in the day.
GOOD HEALTH TIP:
Breakfast bonus: Eating small meals more frequently may help lower your cholesterol. British researchers recently found that people who ate more than six times a day had lower cholesterol (by about 5%) than those who ate once or twice daily. The key is to eat small, healthy meals every three or four hours.
Who Skips Breakfast? People who are losing weight to improve their appearance tend to skip meals more than those who are losing weight to improve their health.
NEWSFLASH:
Frequent Weight Loss May Affect Immune Function
You already know that going on fad diets can be frustrating, unhealthy and ineffective, because the weight you lose comes right back on, every time. Now there's another reason to end the "yo-yo diet" syndrome - it may compromise your immune system. Investigators studied a group of healthy, overweight, post-menopausal women and discovered that the more often the women had lost 10 pounds or more, the greater the suppression of their immune systems.
TO SUM IT UP: 5 DIET MYTHS EXPOSED
1. Avoid fad diets and concentrate on making healthy lifestyle changes.
2. Check the labels of low-fat "diet" foods for sneakily added sugars and high-calorie content.
3. Stave off diet-destroying hunger pangs with filling high-fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.
4. Add salmon, mackerel, sardines, and other cold water fish to your menu to
increase your intake of health-giving omega-3 fatty acids.
5. Every morning, eat a delicious, low-calorie, high-fiber breakfast such as
oatmeal with fresh fruit

Are You Overworked or Overwhelmed?

By      Expert Author LeeOnna Sanchez

These days, it can be easy to lose sight of what's important. Everyone loses sight of home life and balance when it comes to making ends meet. Knowing whether you're overworked or overwhelmed can be confusing to some. Some companies will downsize, and this can be hard. It puts more pressure on employees. You find you're doing more than what you normally would, and it seems you accomplish less. Keeping home and work life in balance gets hard and you soon find yourself at risk of disapproval by the boss. This is where being overworked can become a big issue.
Another aspect is being overwhelmed. This is more of a feeling. People with active minds can find it hard to concentrate on one thing at a time. They find it difficult to prioritize and doing the most important things first. They come across as a bee who goes from one flower to the next. Being able to multitask can be beneficial, but many studies have shown that doing one task at a time is better. You accomplish more. While being focused makes you appear slower, you're getting more done than the person who is multitasking.
Here are a few things to help you differentiate between being overworked and being overwhelmed:
Overworked
  • Working a lot of OT when asked
  • Taking on projects you can't handle
  • you're more fatigued
  • insomnia
  • increased illness
  • depression or anxiety
  • loss of appetite
  • impaired concentration
  • forgetfulness
Overwhelmed
  • lack of energy
  • high strung
  • stressed out
  • low productivity at work
  • unhappiness
Dealing with being overwhelmed or overworked can be simple. For instance, consider making lists to help you tackle more. Put things in order of most important to things of less importance. Consider getting those big reports done while you have down time rather than procrastinating.
If you find that you're taking on too much at work, consider delegating some tasks out to others that can help you. Start declining OT when it's offered to allow your body the time it needs to relax and reset. Assess your day and consider planning to help keep you on track.
You can't have complete control over your work environment. But, being more aware of how you're feeling and the actual effects it has on you both physically and mentally can help you feel more at ease and in control at work. Work wellness will help keep you on track and can help keep home and work life in balance.

One-Third of American Adults Take Medicines That Can Cause Depression

By

Our health depends a lot on what we eat and drink. However, the very medicines that we take on our physicians' advice to treat certain conditions might be the cause of some other serious ailments. A recent study has found that more than 37 percent of American adults use commonly prescribed medications that have depression as a likely side effect.
According to the study, more than 200 medicines are sold in the United States that can cause depression. Taking a combination of any of these medicines increases the susceptibility to depression. The list includes commonly used medicines like beta blockers (for blood pressure), proton pump inhibitors (for acid reflux), benzodiazepines (for anxiety), anticonvulsants (for epileptic seizures), ACE inhibitors (for managing hypertension) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen (for minor pains, fever, etc.).
Study author Mark Olfson, professor of psychiatry at the Columbia University, said the more these medicines are consumed, the higher the propensity to depression. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), involved 26,192 adult subjects who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey over five two-year cycles - 2005-2006 to 2013-2014.
The participants provided the list of all the medicines that they were taking at that time. Additionally, they also completed a depression questionnaire - Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) - which was based on questions related to mood, sleep, and appetite. It was found that nearly one in three persons was taking medications which had depression and suicidal ideation as serious side effects.
The study authors found that these people were more susceptible to depression than those who were not taking any medicines. It was also found that those taking three or more medicines were three times more prone to depression. Nearly 15 percent of the participants taking three or more medicines were found to be depressed. In comparison, only 5 percent of those who were not taking any medication were depressed, and only 7 percent of those taking only one medication were depressed.
Olfson said the study didn't direct which medicines caused depression. Instead, it showed if someone was already taking medicines, he/she was more likely to be depressed. He added that in determining the exact cause of depression, the researchers need to follow up the subjects from the beginning when they start taking medicine. The study findings suggest that patients should be more inquisitive about the medicines they are prescribed. They must ask their health care provider about the potential side effects of these medicines. If one starts a new medicine, it should be helpful to track changes in the self.
People who develop depressive symptoms without a history of depression should be more concerned as that could be a side effect of the medicines they are taking or could be an interaction. A person should also be able to speak to the doctor about stopping the medicine or reducing its dose, for example, a person taking a medicine for hypertension might be prescribed a reduced dose if he or she starts taking care of the diet, start exercising and limiting the salt intake.
Depression is treatable
Depression is a serious disability worldwide, particularly in the U.S. It can affect a person's physical and mental health, relationships, work or school performance and finances. Taking care of the self, living in the present moment, practicing yoga, meditation and mindfulness, eating well and doing some physical activity are some of the ways of managing depression. In addition, one should also seek treatment for long-term symptom resolution.

Understanding the Difference Between Clinical Depression and Emotional Slump

By

Owing to celebrities like Michelle Williams, Kristen Bell, and Demi Lovato who have openly shared their experiences with depression, the latter is nowadays being discussed more openly than ever before. Yet, due to the stigma attached to mental illnesses, people are still scared of talking about the "issue" and do not know how to differentiate between the symptoms of a depression and a temporary emotional slump.
Given below are a few ways which can help one distinguish between a temporary depressive state and a form of this.
Understanding depression
The first thing that people need to understand is that depression is much more than an extended phase of intense sadness. According to Dr. Daniel G. Amen, an author and psychiatrist, depression, manifests as an outcome of biological issues in the brain and is an extremely complex illness with a set of challenging symptoms.
Dr. Brain Cassmassi, a psychiatrist and mental health consultant in Los Angles, shared that in order for an individual to be diagnosed with clinical depression, they need to meet certain criteria after undergoing a bout of sadness exceeding two weeks, for most part of the day, or every day. Some of these criteria include changes in appetite, changes in sleep pattern, fatigue, a sense of guilt or worthlessness, and a sense of apathy. In some cases, the individual may also be suicidal.
Clinical depression Vs temporary depression
According to Dr. Barbara Nosal, Ph. D., therapist, and chief clinical officer at Newport Academy, in the case of clinical depression, at least five symptoms typically persist for more than two weeks. On the other hand, if an individual is suffering from temporary depression, only two depressive symptoms would be present. Also, if an individual can still find enjoyment or pleasure in things and hobbies that made them happy in the past, it is not a sign of clinical depression. In the case of a clinical depression, it can be extremely challenging to derive enjoyment out of any kind of activity. Additionally, the afflicted individual also battles feelings of worthlessness or guilt.
Temporary episodes of depression usually have triggers that are easier to spot. Dr. Cassmassi elaborated that major episodes of depression, on the other hand, can occur without an easily identifiable trigger, especially for individuals with a history of repeated bouts of the mental disorder. Dr. Nosal shared that triggers such as social isolation, trauma as a result of abuse, major life changes, or conflicts in personal relationships can trigger clinical depression.
Dr. Cassmassi also stated that while passing thoughts of suicide are common to both situational and clinical depression, if anyone has more defined thoughts of suicide, it is a major sign of clinical depression that needs immediate medical intervention.
Treating clinical depression
Clinical depression can be treated with a combination of medicines and certain psychotherapies. The most effective therapies designed to help patients with clinical depression include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and attachment-based family therapy (ABFT).
CBT helps patients identify self-defeating thoughts and judgments that make life more challenging. The therapy focuses on teaching the patient to think differently so that the negative thought process can be broken and replaced by a more positive one. DBT offers specific skills like emotional regulation and mindfulness, while MET helps in resolving any kind of initial resistance to treatment. ABFT, which is especially designed for adolescent depression, repairs the parent-child relationship and the family system. Dr. Cassmassi said that therapy is a good option even if someone is going through short-term depression. With the help of a skilled therapist, an individual going through temporary depression can learn to handle the next emotional down-period or the next stressful event in a much better manner and prevent the episode from turning into a full-blown clinical depression.
Seeking help for depression
Depression affects more than 7.5 percent Americans, aged 12 years and above, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). With the help of a comprehensive depression treatment plan, comprising therapies, medications or both, clinical depression can be effectively managed.

How To Successfully Deal With SADNESS-Taking The Past Into 2020 Is Not An Option But Down To Choice!

By               Expert Author Kacy Carr

Is it sadness or depression, or, maybe physical pain that's a part of your life you're finding hard to cope with?
Whether the pain is connected to sadness or that of a broken bone, people are more likely to listen to someone who's actually experienced what they are feeling, felt what they've felt, or, pained the way they did or still do. Not for one minute am I implying you ignore medical advice, but rather saying, a shoulder to cry on in some cases is by far the best medicine.
Feeling slightly hypocritical because I'm the complete opposite (no shoulder needed). I fight my emotions alone and therefore others only hear what I want them to hear. But you... if you're struggling to cope, reach out.
It's frustrating when people don't fully understand the extent of your sadness. But how can they know if you bottle up your feelings. Someone that can relate to your every angle of hurting because they've been where you are, is the best person to open up too. Pain is pain, so whether it's your pain, his pain, her pain, their pain, it doesn't change for each individual, it's the exact same for us all, what does differentiate between individuals is our coping mechanisms.
Sadness is a typical outcome of an unhappy event and can instigate depression. To prevent having to fight both you need to stop taking sadness to bed with you, waking up with sadness, walking with sadness, or whatever. An emotion as such is frequently experienced after losing a loved one either through death or through circumstance... sadly shit happens, but it is all about making good of a bad situation. Whether its God up above or another you blame for your loss and for bringing you sadness, try forgiving them.
Forgiveness is a great form of therapy for a troubled mind. The quicker you come to terms with what has been and done, you can move on and be happy again. It's very likely there will be flashbacks of those sad moments you found hard to cope with, but hey, the past is the past.
Forgiveness... whether you give it, or, seek it, what does it matter as long as the hurting disappears.
If there is room in your heart and find you can do this, it is then you'll realize just how happiness is going to be much greater to have in your 2020 than sadness.
